From 18.02.2027 every battery carries a QR code
The Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a QR code on every battery placed on the EU market from 18.02.2027 (Art. 13(6)). It sits on the battery itself or, where that is not possible, on the packaging and the accompanying documents (Art. 13(7)). For your WooCommerce shop this means: every battery product has an address that this code opens.
What the code leads to depends on the battery. For LMT batteries, such as the batteries of pedelecs and e-scooters, for industrial batteries above 2 kWh and for electric vehicle batteries it opens the battery passport (Art. 77(1)). For all other batteries it leads to the information of the label, the declaration of conformity, the notes on disposal and, where required, the due diligence report.
The battery passport is a page with fixed fields
The battery passport is a web page with the fields of Annex XIII of the regulation: data on the manufacturer, the category, the chemistry, the capacity, the durability and the disposal. Part of it is public, part of it is meant only for authorities and entitled parties. The data must be open and machine-readable and stay available even when the economic operator no longer exists (Art. 78).
The passport is linked through a unique identifier under ISO/IEC 15459 (Art. 77). A common form is the GS1 Digital Link: an address that holds the GTIN and, for single batteries, also the serial number, for example https://your-shop.example/dpp/01/09520000000479.
The address belongs on your own domain
A printed QR code cannot be called back. If the address is on your own domain, it stays in your hands: you can change the tool without any code leading nowhere. That is why it pays to keep the passport in your WooCommerce shop and not at a service whose addresses you do not control.
In WordPress this needs two things: pretty permalinks or a host that hands every address to WordPress, and, for serial numbers with a slash, the setting AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode in Apache's VirtualHost. The help on installing explains both step by step.
Produktpass for WooCommerce is free
Produktpass for WooCommerce is our plugin for this task, and it is free. It creates one passport per product and variation, with the template T-BAT-PASS for the battery passport and T-BAT-INFO for the information behind the QR code. Next to each field it names the article of the regulation that asks for it.
The passport pages set no cookies and load nothing from other servers. The plugin makes QR codes as SVG and PNG, an A4 sheet with 24 labels, a badge on the product page and an overview that counts the days to 18.02.2027 and shows which product still lacks data.
The badge shows the passport before the purchase
Your buyers see on the product page that a battery passport exists. In classic themes such as Storefront you choose the position, in block themes such as Twenty Twenty-Five the plugin places a block after the product meta, which you move in the Site Editor. Everywhere else there is the shortcode [produktpass_badge].
A check requests a product page regularly and reports when the theme does not output the chosen position. So you notice when the badge is missing after a theme update.
Produktpass Pro handles serial numbers and imports
If you sell many batteries with serial numbers, you need passports for single items. Produktpass Pro creates them, an add-on for businesses: serial number batches of up to 10,000 QR codes, the CSV import with a dry run and the mapping from attributes such as dpp_chemistry.
The passports still belong to the free plugin. When a Pro subscription ends, every passport page stays online, and printed codes keep working.
The duties stay with the economic operator
A plugin creates pages and codes; whoever places the battery on the market, that is the manufacturer or the importer (Art. 3), is responsible for the data. Whoever buys a branded battery within the EU and resells it does not place it on the market and needs no battery passport for it. Check for each battery which role you have, and agree with your suppliers who puts the code on the battery and which address it holds.
The regulation requires the due diligence report from 18.08.2027, but not from economic operators with less than 40 million euros of turnover (Art. 47, 48 and 52(3)). The economic operator uploads the identifier of each battery to the EU registry as soon as its rules apply (Art. 77(10)).
Frequently asked questions
Does my WooCommerce shop need a battery passport?
From 18.02.2027, LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric vehicle batteries need a battery passport (Art. 77(1)). From the same day every battery needs a QR code (Art. 13(6)). Whoever places the battery on the market is responsible.
Does Produktpass for WooCommerce cost anything?
No. The plugin is free and complete, without a trial and without locked fields. Produktpass Pro is a separate, paid add-on for serial numbers, the CSV import and the mapping.
Does the plugin work with block themes?
Yes. In block themes such as Twenty Twenty-Five the plugin places the badge as a block after the product meta; you move or remove it in the Site Editor.
What happens to the passports if I cancel Pro?
They stay online as long as the free plugin is active. Pro's features become read-only, your data stays readable and exportable.
Can I take over data from JTL-Shop?
Yes, with Produktpass Pro. You import the CSV export of Produktpass for JTL-Shop unchanged; the column artnr then counts as the SKU.
